NSW's first solar farm will be built in the state's west, covering some 200 hectares and generating enough energy to power 20,000 homes.
The state government announced on Sunday 9 January 2011 that approval has been granted for the farm at Nyngan. This large commercial solar power installation will comprise 70 blocks of solar panels installed between one and three metres above the ground, feeding power directly into the electricity grid.
Located in optimum hot and dry conditions, the farm will have a 100-megawatt capacity.
The farm was approved with numerous conditions, including that the farm have a "low visual impact", requiring landscaping.
