Residents of Queensland are about to face a third price hike to their annual electricity bill of about $50. This price increase is in addition to the $60 charge to be introduced by AGL and Origin Energy and the recommended 5.8% electricity price hike announced in late December 2010.
The average household annual electricity bill will increase by about $250 when the three price hikes are added to electricity bills, bringing the annual electricity bill to about $2256 per annum.
The latest additional cost to be added to electricity bills is being blamed on the need to develop more electricity infrastructure, which a report by the AER warned would need to be upgraded by 2013 to deal with the increased demand on the state’s electricity network.
Electricity operating and maintenance expenditure is predicted to rise 19% in QLD over the next five years.
