Global shipments of smart meters are forecasted to exceed 100 million in 2011, according to ABI Research.
ABI forecast these shipments will grow more than 250 million by 2016, with Europe being the main constituent of this total installed base.
The research firm notes smart meters will play a significant role in rolling out energy efficiency and smarter utility initiatives and says that they facilitate the growing dynamic response and home automation markets.
ABI Research’s “Advanced Metering Infrastructure” study analyzes the market dynamics of AMI (Automated Metering Infrastructure) deployment on a global basis.
This study higlights that the Asia-Pacific region has recently also seen significant deployments of smart meters, with Australia in the forefront in AMI deployments. New Zealand is also moving toward development of a national smart metering initiative.
Smart metering is also gaining popularity in the rest of Asia with China announcing in the 12th Economic 5-year plan that AMI plays a key role in its economic vision.
South Korea has begun a Smart Grid Demonstration Project and Singapore has also announced “Intelligent Energy System.”
